What a straight end of the year we have fallen on those who analyze mobile phones, brands have made a deep commitment to renew their Christmas catalog. And today it's time to analyze a phone that I've been testing for more than two weeks, the OPPO Reno 2. The renewal of the family was carried out with two models, the Reno2 Z and the mobile that occupies us, the OPPO Reno2. One is more accessible, the other much more complete. The two show the OPPO charism.
The Chinese brand is recognizable for its elegant designs that usually involve two aspects: they are large mobiles, also bet on high quality materials. This implies that our protagonist is solid, distinguished, also great. And heavy. Much.
He OPPO Reno2 It offers what anyone needs by going much further, especially in the photographic field. Clean front thanks to the shark fin motorized front camera, high-end features, great autonomy, very good sound … And Color OS with Android 9 Pie, perhaps it is the highlight within the negative terrain. Let's go deeper.
OPPO Reno 2 features
Like any review, it's time to start at the base to build the criticism to the conclusions, which are the roof. In this case, the base is a high quality hardware that would point to the highest range if not for details such as the included processor, which stays one step below in terms of power without ceasing to be suitable for any task. Not only reading the table, but also holding it in the hand: the OPPO Reno 2 distills quality for every millimeter.
Then I leave you with a technical data sheet: it is worth checking out before you dive into the analysis.

OPPO does not disappoint in design or materials: the Reno 2 is "top"
OPPO phones often seem hopelessly similar to each other, even other related brands offer large, heavy and quality designs in materials, such as Realme or OnePlus. In this sense, the strength of the OPPO Reno2 surprises the uninitiated and invites those who already have experience with this brand to stay at home.
The mobile in question offers double sided glass with a clean front in which frames of more than one millimeter are perceived, also a minimum lower flange, of somewhat less than 5 mm. Solid aluminum frame, power button and dual SIM or SIM tray and SD Card on the right side, volume buttons on the left side … And a bottom edge where the headphone jack, USB C and the output of the external speaker That OPPO has not dispensed with the jack is good news, also that it includes some gift headphones in the package. They are of good quality (and clones of the EarPods).
The mobile is very solid and, despite the fragility of the double-sided glass, it is very resistant
The back side is clean, with bright gradient (turquoise in my case); the lenses of the cameras do not stand out because the photographic set is integrated inside the phone; and you can see a small ball under the vertical block that helps the glass that protects the cameras do not come into contact with the surface where the mobile rests. This element, as well as the central strip highlighted, denote the charisma that the brand puts in its best creations.
Two details that I miss in a mobile of this category (I know that I usually repeat): dust and water resistance and the wireless charging. Neither feature is found in the OPPO Reno2 despite the fact that its unibody design, and double-sided glass, would facilitate its incorporation. OPPO will end up including Qi load because it has already registered its own system, but that will be in another model, not in the Reno2. By extension, neither in the OPPO Reno2 Z.
The mobile is very wide and can be made too big in small hands. It transmits solidity and quality, also the feeling that it can slip if attention is not paid when holding it. Yes, OPPO includes a case in the package that moves away from the typical transparent ones to get out of the way: the included rubber case offers protection, it also stands out with a design that simulates fabric.
The biggest penalty of OPPO Reno2 is its power
It is not a mobile of the highest range, and that should be noted despite the fact that the relationship between general characteristics and construction is at an excellent level. He misses a Snapdragon 855, especially at times when the phone is working in the background (some lag I found myself), also when it comes to thoroughly squeezing the graphics. Not that the Snapdragon 730G which brings a bad SoC as standard, rather the opposite, but it already denotes that step that makes it go back in terms of gross power.
It is a great mobile for games since, despite not including a processor of the Snapdragon 800 family (nor its relevant GPU of the highest range), it still maintains the type that is left over to chew titles like Fortnite, PUBG or Asphalt 9 to quality more than decent. Nor are other tasks resisting: despite the perceived slowdowns, the OPPO Reno2 is a mobile that has worked for me without any problem. It is a delight, does not convey any feeling of laziness.
How is the phone displayed when it is forced to the limit by performance tests? I have done the tests for you: below you have the OPPO Reno2 faced with AnTuTu, Geekbench 5, 3D Mark and Androbench. As I always say, the numbers are not indicative of the overall quality, they only offer an approximation to the maximum that the telephone can give itself.
Maybe he Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G Do not give as much the size as the smartphone deserves, but the rest of the hardware base is up to the task: 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage, more than enough even for advanced use. In addition, the OPPO Reno2 allows you to expand storage with SD cards up to 256 GB. Of course, the tray is triple: or double SIM or SIM and SD Card.
High quality screen with no obstacles in sight
The shark fin motorized camera not only offers that spark of charisma that ends up characterizing the phone, but also maximizes the screen surface to get the front to take advantage almost perfectly. This does not mean that OPPO Reno2 lacks frames, but they do not cloud the use. Further, the screen is not curved, something that those who are not too enthusiastic about such OLED panels will appreciate.
In terms of technology, OPPO Reno2 is committed to a 6.5 inch AMOLED display with a utilization rate of 93.1 (according to OPPO). It offers FHD + resolution (1080 x 2400 pixels), is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6 glass, has a high contrast of 1400000: 1 and the maximum brightness is 500 nits. Enough for most environments, although something stays just outside and in sunlight.
The screen is of great quality, but accuses of a maximum brightness something fair
The quality of the included panel is very high. Offers a good color representation with certain series saturation which can be customized from the screen settings. The sharpness is good, also the viewing angles and does not offer too appreciable changes in hue by varying the perspective of the screen. Yes it lacks a minimum adjusted brightness: in full darkness annoys the eye.
Under the screen the fingerprint reader. This is placed in the ideal position to unlock the phone with your thumb (in the lower area of the phone). And it offers no complications, either when recording a new fingerprint or using it. Unlocking is fast and accurate., quite close to that of a capacitive fingerprint scanner.
A battery that behaves like a champion: the OPPO Reno2 does not suffer from low autonomy
The 4000 mAh of the phone, and its custom layer, make the OPPO Reno2 hold more than two days away from the plug with moderate use. Abusing comes to the day in a comfortable way. And without it being easy to turn it off: I've been using it for more than an hour while it was below 3. In this sense, I can remove the fear of those who do not leave the house without putting the plug in the backpack: with OPPO Reno2 it is not necessary.
The average number of screen hours has varied depending on whether I use in the background services such as tethering, which is common when I work away from home. From 6/7 hours on average I have not been able to go down; keeping several hours of play, which lately I am vitiated the Mario Kart Tour. From my experience, and although it does not give an exaggerated performance in graphics, it is a very suitable phone for video game entertainment.
Extensive autonomy and fast charging, a combination that works as a bet
If the battery holds on like a champion, the fast charging VOOC 3.0 is not far behind: it is very fast. In the box comes a 20 W charger that recharges the phone at a remarkable speed. It is not the fastest I have tried, but it is enough and is left over to give energy for hours with a while on the plug.
Then I leave the evolution of the segmented load in sections (from 0 to 100):
- 5 minutes charge: 8 battery.
- 10 minutes charge: 17 battery.
- 20 minutes charge: 34 battery.
- 30 minutes charge: 50 battery.
- 50 minutes charge: 75 battery.
- Total: 1 hour and 25 minutes.
Too bad that such good energy performance is marred by a lack: wireless charging. OPPO has not yet introduced it to their phones, something that will change in the near future. And it's a shame: the OPPO Reno2 It deserves this technology, at least in my opinion.
Good cast of connections, both wireless and wired
It is always appreciated when a manufacturer keeps the 3.5mm jack on a high price phone since it allows to give life to old headphones without too much complication, especially if they have good quality. This is something that can be done in the OPPO Reno2 since the connector is in the lower part of the device, next to the USB C. And the sound is up to par: very good quality, balanced, with software audio improvements in the settings, without excessive presence of bass and with treble without stridency. The OPPO Reno2 is an excellent mobile to listen to music, both by cable and Bluetooth.
The external speaker of the phone offers a lot of power, but not so much quality: at high volume it offers excessive distortion. It lacks stereo sound since it has a single speaker in the lower part. Y lacks some serious reinforcement: the acute ones have excessive presence.
OPPO Reno2 lacks FM radio, but it does have NFC, Bluetooth 5, 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac dual band WiFi, it positions without inconvenience and with sufficient speed thanks to its multiple positioning system (GPS / A-GPS / Beidou / Glonass / GALILEO ) and its set of microphones achieves good quality in audio recording, both with recorder applications and in the sound recording of videos.
The OPPO Reno2 completes its excellent design, great battery and good screen with a high quality auditory section; which means that using the mobile to enjoy multimedia content is just that, an enjoyment. The mobile maintains a balance that touches the outstanding, especially considering that it is not a phone of the highest range. It has few buts, some as notorious as the system version included.
Custom layer without updating to Android 10
I have already highlighted it a couple of times, it seems to me that it is a zancadilla that the manufacturer makes himself. And, although the phone is maintained in the highest quality, and is suitable to move any application and game without complications, it is not a receipt that has appeared on the market with Android 9 Pie when Android 10 has been in the market for a few months now. It will definitely update, the problem is when.
The OPPO Reno 2 deserved to go on the market with Android 10 or, at least, update soon
Beyond the inconvenience of Android 10, the choice of OS color As a custom layer, it means that there will be those who appreciate its aesthetics and functions while others discard it just because it is as far away as possible from Android stock. I don't dislike it, at least as long as I don't see the square and huge quick settings in the notifications area; In addition to the notifications themselves.
Color OS does not abuse installed applications, it does offer standard ones from Google, Facebook or Instagram, for example. It also has OPPO's own apps with which the brand completes the personalized experience.
Themes, many customizations, gallery and series recorder, compass, a video editor to create recordings in order to share them on social networks … OPPO Reno2 does not come manco in software.
OPPO does not incorporate the standard gestures of Android 9 Pie or those of Android 10, although they approach the latter: they are comfortable and allow you to easily move between the entire phone. There are also the typical navigation buttons and a hidden menu on the sides of the screen called «Smart sidebar«. OPPO allows you to edit this bar and add shortcuts to launch applications quickly. It is also possible to accelerate the launch of Google Assistant turning the power button into a smart one.
One of the best phones to photograph in its price segment
It is not that I was surprised in photography because I have already tried several OPPOs and I know that the brand takes the multimedia capture section very seriously. With the Reno2 OPPO the multiplicity of sensors and objectives of the previous family evolves while maintaining the key detail of the motorized shark fin front camera. This is a simple anecdote, the really important thing is that the phone gets very good photos in almost any environment, even with poor lighting. Sometimes based on forcing processing.
In 2019 it is no longer news that a phone has four cameras behind. Given the enormous specialization of the sensors, the OPPO Reno2 bet on a main sensor of 48 Mpx with an aperture f / 1.7 and OIS; includes a wide angle lens of 8 Mpx and aperture f / 2.2; does not dispense with the telephoto lens with a 13 Mpx sensor and f / 2.4 aperture; and ends with a black and white 2 Mpx sensor to capture the depth (aperture f / 2.4). With this combination the OPPO Reno 2 manages to cope with ease any problem that arises. Ahead, the mobile mounts a 16 Mpx selfie camera with f / 2.0 aperture.
As I said, I really liked the photographic performance of OPPO Reno2, I think it is an excellent phone to portray any environment. Take a good note of the portraits (the clipping is good and the bokeh lacks artifice), it respects the colors well enough, even if sometimes it tends to increase the temperature, it does not usually saturate (the mode of color enhancement itself), the photograph Wide angle takes good note whenever there is enough light and the telephoto also performs very well at the cost of losing detail (suffers in low lighting) and add contrast.
The dynamic range is maintained at a good level and is able to draw light and balance it even in the twilight of the day, always with the main sensor, the most all-terrain of all. Switching between one camera and another is not a major inconvenience, although it is not very intuitive to go to the wide angle, as well as cumbersome: it takes three touches on the button on the screen or slide the button to jump to 0.5x objective. The hybrid zoom reaches 5x (with light captures more detail than it seems); with a digital zoom of up to 20x (testimonial).
The camera application is complete, with different shooting modes that are accessed by sliding the lower menu and on the three bars on the left side. OPPO Reno2 does not dispense professionally (lacks saved in RAW), neither of playful capture with option to time lapse, panoramic mode or stickers that are applied on the captured faces. It has an HDR mode that works quite well in automatic, includes a color enhancement mode that abuses saturation and, as usual, it is possible to assign the controls to Artificial Intelligence so that it is what detect the scene by applying the appropriate photographic settings. I have found a proper functioning of said AI, it has often saved photos that without it would not have come out. Even so, it can be disconnected without it being a drama.
Deploying the shark fin front camera leaves the stone colleagues, it is a surprise that never fails. Beyond this blow of effect, the front camera maintains the type with selfies of sufficient quality that accuse certain watercolor and loss of sharpness, even in half light. Save the portraits and apply a cut to the height of the rear cameras; With a natural blur and no lens effects. In addition, and as is tradition in Chinese brands, OPPO takes advantage of strain an array of beauty effects. Effects that, as you neglect applying them, you end up with the face of a porcelain doll.
Below you have a camera sample of the OPPO Reno2 with all kinds of photographs in their original size and without editing.
The video is also very careful on this phone. Sharpness, good contrast and dynamic range with medium light, a huge quality sound which also zooms if the magnification is applied on the screen … And a detail where the OPPO Reno2 stands out: stabilization. The phone stabilizes thanks to the combination of OIS and EIS of the main sensor and records up to 4K and 30 fps. But it is the superstable mode, compatible only with 1080p (30 and 60 fps) where it comes out. A sample, engraved mobile in hand, is enough to appreciate the smoothness with which the image flows: so free of trepidations that it almost seems mounted on a gimbal.
An excellent mobile in every way and a high range of law despite the lack of processor
The OPPO Reno 2 is one of the mobiles that I liked the most this last half of the year. I expected more content, more sparing in benefits, and the truth is that it is enough and left over to meet expectations and far exceed them. The manufacturer has achieved an excellent mobile, so much so that only design and materials, basic hardware, autonomy or multimedia capture capabilities are appreciated. With their buts that end up justifying the price.
I would have loved to have a Snapdragon 855, perhaps it is what I miss the most: although I did not suffer excessive slowdowns, I did notice certain pulls on more than one occasion. I do not come updated I consider it a huge fault, I do not think that at this point in 2019 I have an excuse, except in a mobile of this category. And not too much more negative, Reno2 is much Reno2.
It is an excellent purchase for more than don't be cheap: OPPO Reno2 amounts to 499 euros. It is a high cost, also the benefits offered are high. From my experience, having it is loving it.
