Technology has evolved exponentially in the last decade, changing our daily habits. We use the smartphone to communicate with others, take photos or videos, play and even pay. Something unthinkable until recently. Would it be possible to use it with our Electronic ID?
Goodbye to dataphone: any Samsung with NFC will be worth receiving payments
Samsung is testing a convenient solution for merchants: enable their mobile phones with NFC to receive mobile payments. A dataphone would not be necessary.
The way in which we carry out procedures has also evolved, the use of telematic means for this being increasingly common. For example, how to identify ourselves in the various administration websites, using our Electronic ID.
The evolutionary leap of the DNIe 3.0
Sometimes the procedures using the new electronic ID can be a nightmare. Must search card reader, expect that everything is well configured and that no conflicts with the browser of our computer. And in a high percentage some of the above will give problems.
The arrival of the new DNIe 3.0 brings with it a very important novelty, incorporating a chip that allows us in addition to use it in the traditional way or use it through contactless technology. This is thanks to the presence of the NFC in the new version of the electronic ID.
So we have a chip with NFC, the vast majority of smartphones incorporate such technology and if there is a device that we always have at hand, that is the smartphone. What if we could use our phone as a card reader? It would be great huh, well yes, you can.
Just we need to comply Some requirements and we can forget the happy traditional card reader:
- Have a DNIe 3.0 which is the only one that has NFC.
- A smartphone that incorporates NFC technology.
- The software which will allow us to use our device as a card reader.
The software section consists of two pieces, an app for our smartphone and A program that we must install on our computer. Once we have all the elements, we will have the possibility to use our phone as a card reader.

Installation of everything necessary
The first thing we should do is install the application on our smartphone and later download and install the DNIe remote setup program on our computer. Once the latter is installed, a program icon will appear on our desktop.
By double clicking, the wizard will begin, explaining the requirements that we must meet and that we have mentioned above. Yes press the Next button, it will ask us what type of connection we want to use to make the connection:
- USB connection: We must connect our smartphone to the computer using a USB cable.
- WiFi connection: Only if our smartphone and computer are connected to the same WiFi network.
Important: In case of using the WiFi connection, NEVER do it using a public network and always make this connection from a private network of our knowledge.
If we have selected the option to use the USB connection, this window will appear:
In our device, within the USB connection modes that will appear in the notification bar, we must select the MTP file transfer. Then we will open the application on our smartphone and select the option «Connect with USB» and we will be ready to use it as a card reader.
If we have selected the option to use the WiFi connection, this window will appear:
The next thing we have to do is open the application on our smartphone and select the option «Connect with WiFi». We will scan the QR code that will appear on the screen of our computer and we will be ready to use it as a card reader.
Whether we choose the USB connection or the WiFi connection, our phone will ask us permission to use the wireless connection and access to storage of the same. Another aspect that we should not forget is to activate the NFC connection. Although the application itself will indicate it if it is deactivated.
Use of our smartphone as a card reader
If we have done all the previous steps correctly, we should already be prepared to use our smartphone as a card reader. So the message that indicates its operation should appear on the screen of our device.
We must locate where the NFC antenna is located on our device and place our DNIe 3.0 on top. At that time the application will start to establish a secure connection and read the digital certificate integrated in the chip of our identification document.
- If the reading was successful, a window will appear on our computer screen where we must enter the PIN Identification
- In case of error, we must check if our digital certificate is activated or if it has expired.
Important: If we do not have our digital certificate activated or expired, we must follow the instructions on this website.
From this moment we can already access the different administration websites using our digital certificate, using our smartphone and using a really simple process. Being able to renew the demand for employment, download our working life or make an appointment at our doctor.
We must remember that it is essential to have a DNIe 3.0 which is the only one that has an NFC chip. The previous versions of the DNIe do not have such technology and therefore cannot be used through this method of connection to our computer.
