Google explains why the Pixel 4 screen does not always work maximum fluidity

The Pixel 4 have a screen with a high refresh rate, but it does not work as expected. Google explains the reason in the Android code.

A few days ago it was discovered that one of the best novelties of Pixel 4 was not always active. We talked about the fluid display of the Pixel 4, which with a refresh rate of 90 Hz achieves much more fluidity than a conventional screen would achieve.

When the controversy arose we could verify it, to discover that, indeed, the panel only works at maximum fluidity in high brightness scenarios. The Android code itself has revealed why the technology implemented by Google works the way it works.

Why the Pixel 4 screen is not always completely fluid

The screens with a high refresh rate are not a new technology (computer monitors specialized in video games have been with it for years), but it has begun to become popular recently. Already the iPad Pro in 2017 left us stunned, and little by little they have appeared increasingly mobile with this technology.

The operation is simple , the more hertz, the more images per second projects a screen, but it also affects battery consumption, so it is not advisable to always have maximum fluidity active.

There is a technology that allows the refresh rate to adapt adaptively to the most optimal value, using only maximum fluidity when necessary. The problem, according to Google’s comments in the Android code , is that the 90 Hz AMOLED screens do not appear to be ready for it.

Google’s decision seems to be based on a technical limitation.

Specifically, Google is alternating between 60 and 90 Hz continuously , activating the high refresh rate only when there is movement on the screen. Due to technical limitations, this change in frequency causes a flickering, flickering that at low brightness levels is very noticeable for the human eye, which is why they have decided that at low levels the refresh rate does not change.

A limitation in technology that would explain many things

It is curious that the Android code denotes it as a technical limitation in the panel. Is it that the OnePlus and other brands have no such limitation?

Well, they probably have it too, but having a situation in which the refresh rate varies less often we don’t get to perceive it.

In terms of consumption, we believe that Google’s decision is appropriate, since it tries to achieve in its Pixel what Apple does in the iPad Pro , tablets that natively support the adaptive refresh rate.

And why does the iPad Pro not have that technical limitation? Well, there are many factors, but initially, using IGZO panels and not AMOLED seems the most important.

That Google recognizes in its code the technical limitation of the panel could be the reason why Samsung, who is manufacturing this type of panels, is not using them even in its more expensive phones. Proven: Google limits the 90 Hz of the Pixel 4 to the screen brightness

The Google Pixel 4 has a screen with a 90 Hz refresh rate, but they suffer an absurd limitation: it only works at that rate with a brightness greater than 75%.

With the Google Pixel 4 reaching the hands of the first buyers, and the analysis of the media already published (ours included), the phone is facing the avalanche logic of criticism , both positive and negative. On the one hand, it is a brutal camera, also the Android that is better to be updated; on the other hand, it has absurd errors, such as starting with 64 GB of RAM, having a battery contained or suffering an illogical problem with the high refresh rate on the screen.

That the refresh rate of the screen is limited to tasks where it is really appreciated has logic since this saves a lot of battery: it does not make much sense to print the screen 90 times in a second when you are editing a document, for example. Nor does it make much sense what Google has done in the Pixel 4: limit 90 Hz to situations where the screen brightness is greater than 75% .

As they discovered in a Reddit thread , and checked in XDA Developers , 90 Hz is only activated when the Google Pixel 4 increases the screen brightness by 75% . This implies that most of the time the panel operates at 60 Hz since, obviously, 75% brightness is too high for most environments, at least as long as the mobile phone is not used outdoors and in full daylight.

We have checked Google’s limitation on our Pixel 4 XL using the Testufo page . As you will see in the following video, the refresh rate rises from 60 Hz to 90 Hz just by raising the brightness; descending with the opposite action.

Although Google limits the refresh rate as standard, there is a way to force 90 Hz constantly. To do this you have to activate the force from the developer settings : you can see how it is done, and the results on the screen, through the following video.

Although there is a way to force constant 90 Hz, not all users will know that their mobile has a limitation on the screen . Especially when Google advertises its Pixel 4 with « Fluid display »: using the mobile with a brightness of more than 75% is not usual.

Video recording is one of the most complex aspects to achieve in the smartphone experience. In this sense, the iPhone is the best, followed by Samsung, which also makes mobiles with exceptional video recording.

Google is not yet able to reach the high standards of these brands, being unable to integrate 4K video recording at 60 images per second. This video mode requires not only a good camera, but also a large computing and storage capacity sufficient to save such video.

Apple has the achievement by having managed to have a recording system with these figures stabilized. Samsung offers 4K recording at 60 fps from the Galaxy S9 (although they do not yet offer it with stabilization). But in 2019 Google thinks it’s a bad idea.

This has been indicated on Twitter, which, when asked by a user, answered the following: «Pixel 4 supports video recording at 4K at 30 images per second in the rear camera. We have found that most users are still recording at 1080p, so we have focused our energy on improving quality in this mode instead of 4K at 60 images per second that can take up half a GB of storage per minute.

An attitude problem

It is not surprising that Google’s decision brings controversy, just as it had when Huawei decided not to integrate video recording in 4K at 60 images per second in the Huawei P30 Pro (something they have solved in the Mate 30 ).

In Google’s explanation we see a double sin of conformity. I explain:

  • First, in space: Google has been compliant in its Pixel 4 with space, by including only 64 and 128 GB options, while most direct rivals start from a minimum of 128 or 256 GB. Samsung even offers versions with 512GB or 1TB expandable to even more using microSD cards.
